Obituary for Johnny Lee Hendrix

Johnny Lee Hendrix was born in Thomasville, Georgia on July 30,1955 as the second child of Claretha Hendrix and Frank Hendrix Sr. and was baptized as a young child at New Chapel Missionary Baptist Church in Ocala, Florida.

Raised in Ocala, Florida alongside older brother Frank Hendrix Jr. and sisters Lettie Reeves and Jacqueline Gabriel, Johnny grew up as a lover of the outdoors, fishing, and music and could often be found lying on the floor listening to records with his siblings. In high school, Johnny cultivated his love of football and stood out as a star football player for Vanguard High School. Johnny’s football photos and accomplishments as a football player can still be viewed in the halls of Vanguard.

Upon graduation, Johnny attended Florida A&M University where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry and was a prominent member of the Science Club in Jones Hall there. Johnny furthered his education in chemistry at the University of Florida until his advisor and mentor passed away unexpectedly. Having worked throughout the Tampa Bay area as a Chemist for over 30 years, Johnny was well known and respected throughout the industry as an accomplished chemist and mathematician.

Johnny Lee Hendrix transitioned from this earthly life on July 12, 2020 in Fort Lauderdale, Florida at the age of 64 years old. Johnny leaves to carry on and cherish his memories: companion Cheryl Hendrix, daughters Sherelle Hendrix Shelton (Joshua Shelton), Marika Woods, and Kalisha Woods, grandchildren Bailey Shelton and Joshua Shelton Jr, Malachi Greene and Zora Greene; sisters Lettie Reeves (Bertrum Reeves) and Jacqueline Gabriel, several nieces and nephews, best friends since elementary school Howard Speights and Michael Andrews, as well as a host of loving extended family members and in-laws.

Johnny is preceded in death by his loving parents Claretha Hendrix and Frank Hendrix Sr., brother Frank Hendrix Jr., and childhood best friend Darryl Brock.

If you knew Johnny Hendrix, then you know that he loved spending time with his family and friends, Florida A& M University, and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Johnny could often be found at the grill during family events or in front of the tv when the Bucs played a game and if he couldn’t watch a game on tv, then he would often be found listening to his beloved Rattlers or Buccaneers on the radio. Johnny Lee Hendrix was a man who always wore a smile and he will be greatly missed by many.
